Eat More Fats To Support A Healthier Heart

The most effective way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is with consistency and commitment. This means keeping up on regular exercise, eating proper amounts of fruits/veggies, and kicking bad habits like smoking or drinking can really help your heart stay strong! While there’s no one-size fits all solution, it comes down to which best practices work for YOU (because everyone has different needs).

Research has shown that the following habits are effective for supporting heart health. Studies show these practices can help protect against heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

In addition to changing your diet, it is important you get sufficient exercise.

Develop A Habit of Eating Healthy Fats

Harvard Healthy says, “There are two broad categories of beneficial fats: monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Good sources of monounsaturated fats are olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, avocados, and most nuts, as well as high-oleic safflower and sunflower oils.”

In the 1960s it was discovered that people living in Greece and other Mediterranean countries experienced lower rates of heart disease compared to other countries. The main difference was their intake of olive oil. This discovery launched the mass interest into what we call today as the Mediterranean Diet.

What is the Mediterranean Diet? It’s a pretty simple plan that doesn’t require much work to follow. Most of your food will be from plants and low on red meat, with some fish or dairy for those who want more protein. Healthy fats include olive oil, avocados, fish, and nuts.

Diets high in vegetables and fruits (like the MedDiet), are good sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants help to fight against oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Oxidative stress is thought to play a role in a variety of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.”

Polyunsaturated fats are essential fats that we typically consume in cooking oils like corn oil, sunflower oil, and safflower oil. Since our body doesn’t produce these fats on it’s own, we have to get polyunsaturated fats from food sources. These types of fats help to support blood clotting, muscle movement, and inflammation.

A great way to find items with polyunsaturated fats is to look for the two main types: omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids.

Harvard Health also states, “Eating polyunsaturated fats in place of saturated fats or highly refined carbohydrates reduces harmful LDL cholesterol and improves the cholesterol profile. It also lowers triglycerides.”

Don't Forget to Exercise

According to Hopkins Medicine there are specific types of exercise that benefit heart health more than others.

Aerobic Exercise: Helps to improve circulation, which results in lowered blood pressure and heart rate, and increases how well your heart pumps. Aerobic exercise also reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and, if you already live with diabetes, helps you control your blood glucose. Try to fit in at least 30 minutes 5 days a week for best results.

Strength Training: Also known as resistance training, uses weights to help build lean muscle mass and reduce fat. Research shows that a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance work may help raise HDL (good) cholesterol and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Stretching: Although flexibility doesn’t contribute directly to heart health, it allows your muscle to remain long which can help to alleviate joint pain allowing your body to enjoy better aerobic and strength training.

These are all great habits that if done regularly will not only keep you feeling great but also help improve heart health.

It’s great to combine healthy habits with healthy supplements. As you know we have a great selection of heart healthy supplements that can be found on our Heart Supplements page.

3 Scientifically Backed Ways To Support A Healthy Heart

Emerald Blood Pressure Health

Maintaining a healthy heart requires consistency and a commitment to living a healthy lifestyle – like keeping up on a regular exercise routine, eating proper amounts of fruits and vegetables, and kicking bad habits like smoking or drinking.

There are many great ways to keep your heart in tip-top shape, but which ones are most effective?

While we can’t speak to what will or won’t be the best option for you specifically, we do know what habits have been researched, tested, and shown to be some very effective practices to support overall health – specifically with the heart.

What are these scientifically-backed ways to support a healthy heart? Let’s dive in…

#1: The Mediterranean Diet

You may have heard of the Mediterranean Diet, or MedDiet, through friends or social media. It’s pretty popular and fairly simple to follow. Most of the foods on the Mediterranean Diet include a high intake of plant foods, low intake of red meat, some fish, low amounts of dairy, some wine, and of course, healthy fats like olive oil.

The Mediterranean Diet first came about in the 1950s when it was noted that heart disease was not as common in Mediterranean countries as it was in the U.S. Since then, numerous studies have confirmed that the Mediterranean diet helps prevent heart disease and stroke.

This brochure is a great resource that maps out the various foods allowed on the diet.

#2: Antioxidants

What are antioxidants? The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health tells us “Antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage. Diets high in vegetables and fruits (like the MedDiet), which are good sources of antioxidants, have been found to be healthy.”

Studies have shown antioxidants to counteract oxidative stress. NCHI shared a 2009 analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2000 and 2001–2002) estimated the amounts of antioxidants adults in the United States get from foods and supplements. Supplements accounted for 54 percent of vitamin C, 64 percent of vitamin E, 14 percent of alpha- and beta-carotene, and 11 percent of selenium intake.

#3: Regular Exercise

According to Hopkins Medicine, there are specific types of exercise that benefit heart health more than others.

As you know we have a great selection of heart-healthy supplements that can be found on our Heart Supplements page.

Tired of the Burn? Avoid These Common Causes of Reflux & Other Digestive Issues

Do you have acid reflux or the more severe form of it known as gastroesophageal-reflux disease (GERD)? This is often an overlooked digestive condition that affects millions all over the world.

Common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, and throat pain; less common ones can be coughing up blood. This less-common symptom is due to a burst stomach ulceration in certain cases where there are esophagus tears — caused by too much pressure from food moving down into the stomach. Incidence rates vary greatly depending on the continent – one study found 28 percent of North American adults suffer from GERD.

What is happening with GERD?

GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter does not work correctly. This causes acid to backwash up into your mouth and throat, which may cause burning sensations or heartburn.

How To Reduce Your Risks for GERD

The most common risk factors for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) are being overweight and having a history of smoking cigarettes. Other aggravating factors include:

Looking for a supportive way to help your body regulate natural digestion and detox functions?

Our Doctor Formulated Digest and Detox formulas were created to help cleanse the body, all formulated with clinical amounts to help support optimal results.

Risks With Common GERD Drugs

Commonly prescribed drugs for GERD can be risky and should not be used long-term. PPIs currently available on prescription in the USA are dexlansoprazole (Dexilant), esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazleo (Protonix), and rabeprozale (Aciphex).

These medications suppress stomach acid secretion, but come with side effects such as headache, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, which is why your doctor may recommend another option if possible before prescribing an unnecessary medication.

And there is more concern. A study by the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs found that PPI use was associated with deaths, in particular from cardiovascular disease and upper gastrointestinal cancer. This latest research follows on previous studies which revealed links between gastric ulcers and an increased risk for heart problems or kidney failure among patients taking acid reflux drugs such as H2 blockers (another type of stomach suppressor).

Lead researcher Dr Ziyad Al-Aly (Assistant Professor Medicine at Washington University School St Louis) is worried about what his findings could mean given how many people have already begun using these meds — despite being aware they may cause MORE serious side-effects than expected.

Dr. Al-Aly states, “Given the millions of people who take PPIs regularly, this translates into thousands of excess deaths every year.”  Additionally, due to so many people consuming PPI medications long-term, he cautioned: “Taking PPIs over many months or years is not safe, and now we have a clearer picture of the health conditions associated with long-term PPI use.”

Stomach Acid is Necessary for Digestion

Your body uses stomach acid to break down food, aiding in our absorption of certain nutrients. PPIs can cause many nutrient deficiencies, including magnesium which leads to chronic fatigue symptoms or anemia, as well as deficiency in B12, vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron.

This often happens because it suppresses hydrochloric acid, so you may be missing out on the effective benefits of balanced gut flora due to taking medicine with these side effects.

Mucosave™ FG, an ingredient in our REFLUX HEALTH,  has been shown in double-blind placebo controlled-studies to help reduce frequency and severity of heartburn.*1

  • Significantly reduced heartburn and acid regurgitation episodes
  • Reduced the frequency and intensity of symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux

Why Your DNA Needs Glutathione

benefits of glutathione

DNA holds our genetic information and the “blueprint” for life. It stores everything from your eye color, height, personality traits – you name it!

Most people have heard that a person’s genome can be compared to an operating system of a computer; however, your genome has many more layers than that of a computer.

The "A.I." Within Your Cells

When you think about it, your body has a supercomputer made of cells that processes information and makes decisions based on signals received from sensors (or neurotransmitters) which easily rival the capabilities of any modern-day computer software.

As Bill Gates said in response to Thomas Stewart’s article ‘The Human Body as Supercomputer’, DNA isn’t just similar; It has more similarities than differences with computers.

Your DNA is the most sophisticated and complex protein-based language system in existence, and it has the ability to rearrange its genes (protein-coding regions) to adapt to the environment and the needs of your body.

DNA’s double helix structure is wound up around proteins called histones and compressed into an incredibly tiny space (about 6000 times smaller than the head of a pin).  If you were to stretch out DNA from each cell, it would reach about six and a half feet in length!

Glutathione Can Help Protect Your DNA

Your body has built-in mechanisms to help protect your DNA. For example, there are sophisticated detoxification pathways that eliminate both the toxic byproducts of your metabolism as well as chemicals you may have been exposed to from the environment.

Did you know Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant in our bodies?

Glutathione is known as the master antioxidant and is one of the most important and powerful antioxidants in your body.

Glutathione levels in the body may be reduced by a number of factors, including poor nutrition, environmental toxins, and stress. Glutathione levels may also drop dramatically during aging.

Most Americans Are Missing Out On The Benefits Of Glutathione

A diet low in glutathione can lead to an increased risk of environmental toxins and health problems. Since most Americans don’t get enough Glutathione in their food they’re missing out on all sorts of benefits from this essential nutrient, including:

The best way to get rid of toxins is by eating a healthy diet, but if you’re exposed to toxins regularly or have an unbalanced immune system, consider supplementing with oral glutathione.
